A Tree Grows no More in Pennsport

My block in Pennsport is, like many other Philadelphia blocks, tree-lined and shady. It's beautiful in spring, and keeps the houses cool and, until recently, I thought all of my neighbors shared my affection for our hardy neighborhood trees.

So I come home a month or so ago and my neighbors had taken down a lovely mature tree that was in front of their house. Why, you might ask (and we did). Because apparantly trees "leech stuff out of the bricks" and "stain the sidewalk" and "attract rats."

You have got to be kidding me.

Yeah, the trees attract more rats than the trash you leave strewn about in front of your house. And you mind the leaf litter on the sidewalk but could care less about the tobacco juice your son spits on it or the bubble gum ground into it.

Some people have no sense.

hey - found you on Blotanical. I completely agree with you - some people are effing idiots when it comes to trees. We told some neighbors that we were going to take out a tree (we need to in order to get enough sunlight for the vegetable garden on the other side of the fence in our backyard) and they said, "Oh yeah. Those trees are really messy. They get leaves and stuff all over your cars!"

Yeah, like that's a reason to take out trees! Grr.

Anyhow, looking forward to what else you have to say.

Another Philly garden blogger! I live in Bella Vista. =) That's so South Philly. It's amazing we still have to convince people in our neighborhood that trees are a GOOD thing, not a nuisance. I look forward to reading your blog!

It's awful, isn't it? And the empty spot where they took out the tree just has green planks of wood covering it. That's MUCH nicer looking than a tree.

It's great to see people commenting here - thanks so much! And another Philly garden blogger - that's awesome! Have you ever tried to get into the community garden on Christian Street, around 5th?
